Types of Water Contaminations
There are three different categories of water in a water loss:
Category #1- Clean Water
This is when the water comes from a clean, sanitary source, and poses little to no risk to humans or animals. Examples of this are: broken water supply lines, sink or tub overflows, or any other water line, such as a line to an ice maker.
Category #2 – Grey Water
This is when the water comes from a source that contains significant contamination. The
contamination can include chemical, biological or physical elements that could cause illness or discomfort after exposure. Examples of this are: overflowing toilets with urine, sump pump leaks or discharged water from appliances such as a dishwasher or washing machine.
Category #3 – Black Water
This is when the water comes from a source that is considered very harmful. This contamination includes unsanitary agents, dangerous bacteria and fungus, and toxic substances. This category has an extreme risk of causing illness, and exposure should be avoided at all costs unless you are a trained professional. Examples of this are: sewage, seawater, and overflow from bodies of water.
